That spot on the cable always rusts. I usually grease and put some shrink tube around this open part of the cable. This is also why I went down to the outback.

Should have went up and borrowed a golf cart for the ride back and got the kayak tomorrow

I've had to pedal a 14 before, not easy. I now carry a wrench and a complete set of replacement cables with me. Have had to use them twice too.
