What Andy said, x2.
Though current squid reports are about as common as current fish reports, when the squirts are out there in good volumes, very often, so are the whites. If you're not in the loop (we aren't), your best bet, since you live in Oceanside, would be a drive to La Jolla the night before you MIGHT go, say around midnight. If you see the very bright lights of what appear to be squid boats working outside of the south point of the reserve, then it may be worth a try going the next night. Another note, for $10 some of the squid boats will give you all the live squid you'll need for the day, plus enough for fresh dead on your next couple of trips.

You can try the big bay at night. I caught a 30" WSB near the nado bridge...that same night I caught a freaking mullet of all things too. Mouth hooked them both on secret sauce marinated/frozen jack smelt.
I'm all over the bays at night, but there's (almost)no way you'd catch me out to sea in the pitch black. |

im still going to hit it early this weekend. WSB comming out of the bay and the Pride did a WSB trip on friday. although they didn't catch any. i've launched out of new port at 3:30 to make the hour and a half paddle south before daylight during the summer. its no more sketchy than during the day. actually better imho. you can hear all the waves around you, every bird land and the bait hit the surface. during the day you don't get any of that.

Unless theres a hint of red tide..... (This I know very well) and a frenzy of glowing sharks circling you isnt any more comforting than just hearing the slashes and bumps but a teeny bit cooler to watch.......... I think I just reminded myself why I would like a skiff. |
