North County Thresher

To those that have been wanting to catch a Thresher--be careful what you wish for. I've hooked many Threshers and have always let them go, or they manage to let themselves go. On Sunday I was fishing for yellowtail off Cardiff and hooked a bigger than usual T. I usually get them close enough to cut the leader or they bite through the line. This was a much longer fight- three hours plus hours. Once I finally got him close he was way to exhausted for me to try and revive him. I clipped a gill, and tried to pull him in the kayak. That was not going to happen as he was too heavy to lift without flipping. I had to put my life jacket around him to keep him from sinking. Then a two hour paddle/peddle dragging him back to the beach. I WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN!!! I would be very careful if you are trying to catch one by yourself, that tail is wicked especially if there was Rapala stuck in it.

I'm guessing he weighed about 115 lbs with the tail.

Nice T, I'm jealous. 3 hours? sounds like fun. That's a lot of fish for the freezer. Mmm, Mmm, good.
