What a sad tragedy. No deck watch, shame on the Captain. On large Merchant Ships, the mates have to complete and log that fire and security rounds were completed prior to relieving the bridge during night hours.

root cause

There is some information that they are also not revealing. What caused the fire? Probably another safety violation. Its sad because the people that boarded put there trust in the operators thinking this is a professional operation.

I bet there are going to be some new hurdles for operators to comply with as a result of this incident. No more grandfathering in vessels that do not comply with escape hatch regulations.

An article said an overloaded electrical outlet.
