Thanks for the story about the pelican. I agree with your sentiments about the outlandish way that person cruelly-abused that animal, and am sad to see a fellow angler devolve to that level.

On the other hand, I think maybe we should give lowprofile the benefit of the doubt, as he was probably jesting or venting his frustration... Posts online don't normally reveal the full aspect of a person's real intentions... as it is more likely that he was 'just saying.'

Of course, if we see him out on the water clubbing seals or sea lions with an icepick, that's another matter.

I'm actually planning to buy that catch back since the description says that there are drainage holes for fluid. I normally take out a trader joes soft-shell, insulated tote bag with some ice to keep my legal catches fresh. Spares me from attracting annoyances or other encounters. My cousin had a Boston Whaler with a few of those offshore fish bags which were awesome. Kept the decks clean, and fish fresh (sashimi-grade).

As for a humane method for warding off unwanted wildlife, I wonder if something such as a noise-can would be effective without harming the offender in question.

The best option here is to just make the thread go away...

Why, because someone SAID something you didnt like.
I have countless run ins with various types of sea life that has needed to be deterred, I dont believe in harming it but if the need arises to use force to protect myself I will. Try taking a 8 year old out on a tandem and having a seal jump on the back not once but twice, both times I shot it with a paintball marker in the side and it came back. I had to radio the harbour patrol for assistance, at which point they actually tied the seal to their boat an towed it away from us. every time I tag a seal with the paint ball marker I don't feel bad at all either.

I don't feel bad at all.

Thinking of rigging a boning knife to a stick.

Don't you know you're supposed to talk it out with the wildlife? Next time, you tell that animal what it has done wrong, how it's violating your personal space, and that you too would like to eat the catch you worked so hard for. Being perfectly reasonable I'm sure the creature will recognize the error of it's ways, apologize and go on about it's day. After all, when two wild animals go head to head over food they tend to take into account each others feelings, have a good long debate about the morality of their intentions and eventually come to a joint resolution that suits both their needs...

That's how it goes, right?

it was just a sarcastic, evil plot. the paintball gun might be handy. although most of the time i see them is when they are still under water right by my yak. they never give enough body to get a good shot, unless you peg them in the head.

no one cares i used a paddle, all they see is the word knife and go ballistic. I bet no one here would go moose hunting in alaska without bear protection though.

tight lines.

Do any of you remember when some "insert word here" was cutting off the bills and pouches of pelicans here in SD. I think that was 15 years or so ago. I hope we don't see that BS happening again. With social media and cameras every where that will give every one a black eye. Beating a pelican to death for what they do naturally (eating fish) is just wrong, illegal, and unnessasary.

By all means defend yourself, but defence doesn't start with carring a deadly wepon. It starts with knowledge and a defensive mindset. When you're in bear country you put your chow in a tree or in a bear proof can. You don't stash granola under your pillow in the tent. Treat sealions the same. Get your fish landed, bled, and secured out of sight as quickly as you can. I have never once bled a fish over the side of the yak. I bleed them down the front scupper hole (now mirage drive slot) and just keep water flowing down the hole with a sponge. It's NEVER the animals fault in any human/animal interaction or confrontation. Mike

Keeps, Jaws, Pelicans, and other annoying fish thieves from taking your hard-earned prize...

Yeah. I know the YTs that have been coming out of LJ have been monstrous...

I finally recalled the bag that my cousin had. It was the Sea Angler fish bag and I think it would be long enough for most species targeted via kayaks. Sea Angler 65" x 20" Off Shore Fishing Bag

If there's enough demand, maybe the board sponsors will decide to carry it.

I agree that keeping the sight and smell of food away from wildlife is the probably the best course of action.
