Will the real Quietman Stand Up?

I heard some far fetched fished stories
before, but when John told me he's competing
in the WCW this year, his second statement
made more sense: Where's the Butts?

John joined me on Friday morning to fish a place
that we know better than our own kids. The
Rivermouth in Dana.

The surf was up because of a groundswell out of the
south. The tide was high (like we like it), and
the place was super fishy. We like that too.

Not fully appreciating the swell, John tucks in
up close to the shore. Then, that funny sound.
Now John is scrambling, crawling over waves,
thinking about the last time he got pitched, a few
years back. I was there and saw the whole thing.
First he's fishing, then he's free swimming, mixed
up with the surfers.
Ahh, those memories...

The raising tide brought in gliding halibut for the
high tide feast. Then as the tide backs off,
the ambushing halibut wait for the fleeing
baitfish. That's when to nail 'em. However,
you've got to sort thru the viviparous rays
(guitarfish), lots of bass, big leopard sharks,
and lots of short butts.

Soon after poaching my spot, John started
getting multiple double hook ups on short
butts. After a while, I quit looking--until
he yells it's a big one.

And it was, at least a 20lb viviparous ray.
We hear the tail meat is good. But back
in the water it goes.

Then alittle later, I hear, "I'm getting spooled."
Now he's got a near 6 ft leopard shark.
He trys to bring it up for a pic. But the shark wants to
make him pay the price for that shot.
Death-rolling John's world and finally
self releasing.

I had to leave 'em biting. I don't know if
John accomplished his mission, that is
a legal butt. But I do know that Quietman
wants to change the WCW rules to include
Guitarfish and Leopard Sharks!

Somehow, I don't think the top contenders
have anything to worry about...

Good to see John back in the saddle.

I first fished with him when we both got started in kayaking back in the day. I have great pics and memories of his tandem rig when we fished HH together when Malibu Kayaks was known as Competition Kayaks. Anyone remember those days
Great pics, please say hi to him for me!
