7-5-15 Carpinteria

To not dwell on my lost rods,
I went fishing of course.

First time hitting up Carp, found
lots of shallow reef structure and nice bits of kelp

Breezy a bit in the morning, and never got bad throughout the day.
Even flattened out mid day for a spell.

water temps 65ish

was OTW from around 8am-3pm

worked the south edge of the reef for nada as I headed out to deeper waters

looked for squid but couldn't find any grabbers on my squid jig ganion

made some mini bonitas and dragged one around on a dropper loop,
got picked up for a T-shark

around 8' long from nose to tail tip
not sure of weight
seemed bout avg. to small size

around 12pm the macks showed up everywhere in 80ft deep waters
made a bunch and got picked up again for another T-shark, poss the same one

both released, or same one released twice
self release the first time after the third time at yak side
second hook-up cut the leader at yakside

damn those things thrash around a lot

worked the north edge of the reef(I think) coming back with macks for nada
then did a hali drift to the landing for nada

fun day
I will be back

wow
I thought I was all alone
only noticed a few boats at the riggs
and one that came over and sat inshore north of me for a bit
before splitting

maybe u were out a bit later?
when I was out deeper
I didn't pay attention to inshore too much
+ the beach got kinda busy with peops
so couldn't really tell anyways

pretty cool spot to yak
easy parking/launch and landing
lifeguards made sure I knew to stay tween the bouys when coming in
no probs

really got fishy out there midday

on the calico followers
maybe try a red crab imitation type bait
like a small scampi with 4 tails in red color
I will next time when im not after the big stuff
not sure if those red crabs have made it up there yet
didn't notice any
tons at BKR

Hey Paul,
Good to hear you're up our way. 8am to 3pm is a short session for you, but at least you know yer legs will work when you land!

Carp reef can be fickle. The water is warm now, though.

I'll be fishing SB tomorrow. Let me know the next time you come up to Leo.

I fished that area also around the same time, nothing. Worked the shore just outside the breakers and got some small stuff.

Still looking to find more spots in Magu to Gaviota zone.
