St. Patty's Day Tacos

Made a last minute decision last night between going surfing or fishing. Chose fishing out of Newport because I ran out of taco meat plus I haven't caught anything in two weeks cuz I've been only surf fishing which hasn't been productive for me. Alright, anyways, launched at around 745 and got out to the spot around 815. It was overcast but smooth as I got out there, overall it was a slow pick at okay size starry rockfish with a couple reds thrown in. Met a fellow kayaker by the name of Vy (not quite sure thats the correct spelling). He showed up around 9, he seemed to be doing quite well. He was pulling up fish of more quality, he finished the day with 6 keepers, of what I saw he had a couple good grade flag rockfish, a big starry, and a good quality red. He told me that it was his first time fishing that spot, also his first time fishing in Newport so early in the year. He definitely knows what he is doing out there. Current proved to be difficult for me throughout the day, but I managed. Ended the day with 7 starries, 2 reds, and a sanddab. Couldn't quite limit out on the cod. Called it a day at around 1230. Left to sunny skies and a little breezy with light chop. Got a little sketchy at the harbor mouth with all the whale watching boats going out plus all the other private boaters. They were leaving huge wakes, could've easily flipped a couple of times. All in all, very happy with my decision.

Tight lines everyone.

Oh, almost forgot. Caught this one rockfish, couldn't ID it. Can any of you guys help me ID this fish? Its the picture of me holding the fish up, I let it go because it was kinda small.

Thanks for the ID. Was starting to think it may have been a bank perch, but I see that it definitely looks like a squarespot. Now I got another fish to add to my list.
