One option is to fill the yak with water and see where it leaks, another is to spray the yak with a soap water mixture, use a shop vac to blow air into the yak and find out where the leak is coming from.

If your yak has rivets, it has leaks. If it leaks a lot you can probably just roll around a few gallons of water inside to find the trouble area. Scuppers are the biggest culprits. Try plugging them from the bottom and filling the foot and bait wells with water to check them.

First thing I do is inspect the entire hull, looking for obvious cracks. Next I test the scuppers as Greg said. If all else fails, I put 5-10 gallons inside and tip the boat at different angles to find the culprit.

Usually scupper pin holes are there right out of production. You can get cracks in them over time from the stress applied with your tie downs. Never run tie downs through the scuppers and never use ratcheting tie downs, they apply to much force.

Andy,

What is the proper method of tying the kayak down so it doesn't fly off?

Frank your kayak is tapered at each end, with 2 tie downs holding it in place it can't go anywhere.

Just make sure it is snug and not able to move side to side, then tie a knot in the tag end to keep it from backing out on the clasp.

I don't go 90, but 80 no problem.

A quick way to check (its been in my leaks were) is to use scupper plugs to plug the bottom ... just do not add too far. Then fill the water ruin and look inside the boat leaks. This means that you can see the scuppers. I'm getting a Hobie again this week, hopefully, before leaving the store I will spray the hatches of the ships and check all the scuppers.

Good luck.
