THREE WINS IN A WEEK!

In hockey, it’s called a hat trick. In bowling, it’s a turkey. No matter what term you choose, the three major wins this week are great news for fishermen.

In Congress, the America’s Conservation Enhancement (ACE) Act was passed by the House of Representatives and now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law. The House also passed the Direct Enhancement of Snapper Conservation and the Economy through Novel Devices (DESCEND) Act which now heads to the U.S. Senate for approval. Finally, the preliminary findings for a groundbreaking Gulf red snapper study were released.

ABOUT THE ISSUES

The ACE Act is a landmark piece of legislation that will benefit recreational fishing by authorizing aquatic habitat restoration projects in all 50 states, protecting lead fishing tackle from unwarranted EPA regulation and reauthorizing and boosting funding for programs critical to the health of the Chesapeake Bay.

The DESCEND Act requires recreational and commercial fishermen to have a venting tool or descending device on board that is rigged and ready for use while fishing for reef fish like red snapper in Gulf of Mexico federal waters. This new legislation will save countless released fish who would otherwise die at the surface due to built up gas in their bodies.

Speaking of red snapper, a new study released this week appears to validate what the recreational fishing community has been saying for years. The results indicate there are “up to three times as many” red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico than previous data indicated. These landmark results must now be incorporated into red snapper management plans for upcoming seasons.
