Why all the makos? - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

My theory is that there are alot of macs and deans in the area getting pulverized by all the cuda feeding on them thus causing a nice chum slick for the sharks to follow. I bet there are some large models around too! I got a nice aerial display from the 5 ft-er I had hooked yesterday. With no tension on my line while it was still in freespool with clicker on, the 100 lb er jettisoned out of the water to at least 8 ft high! He did that a couple of times before he went on a SCREAMING run. All of a sudden the line went limp like a 80 yr old :shock:
I thought he was gone, so I threw it in gear, turned the clicker off and then started cranking it in. I felt no resistance when all of a sudden the line was heading under the front of my yak. The rod loaded up and spun the yak around. It was at that point that the drag starteted to slip and then I felt the sudden burst of speed from the fish. He was gone! The 50 lb spectra was cut pretty cleanly :shock:
Do not mess with that fish!
I did a google search on shortfin mako. The following link is the first hit. If you target these fish, and unfamiliar wit them, you should check it out.

mako's love structure and bait..thats why they're there..during summer we get a mako to pop up damn near every night on the twighlight boats just sittin on buck pipe or the AR's...
