6/29 La Jolla AM - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

Another morning with great conditions, blue-green water and scattered bait, but no pretitors to be had. Greenbacks galore under the lights at the pier. Pod of Rissos were the highlight of the morning. I had a couple of them come right under my yak. They look huge, like 400-500 pounds. I saved myself from a skunk with a small calico on the rubber. I was drifting one high and one low to end the morning, north of the hotel in 60 feet or so. Heard a splash and looked back and saw a few big boils, but did not see the fish. They were right above my baits. Threw the swimbait and saw what looked like that rusty brownish back of a WSB come under me. Had to hang out a bit more. Saw a small mako, just outside the reserve, finning along. It lit up on my swimbait, but never ate it. Last hookup was on a harbor seal, thing left me sweatin and noodle armed after finally cutting it off. Every time I'd pick up the knife, he'd head for the bottom

after I saw you (I was in the white FnD), I finished making bait...mostly small spaniards and one greenie.....trolled out to some birds nw of the point.....greenie got hit but didn't stick....greenie was smashed and had a few faint teeth marks....set on a drift in to the kelp, bait was jumpin everywhere.....looked like a group of flying fish when they jumped around.....hooked up into two juvie wsb and a 6.1lb calico.....when I caught the 2 wsb.....it was every drop with a mac and I had a bite...under me bait balls where everywhere....had 2 hookups but the circle slipped, and then I had 2 clicker screams for nothing......looking really fishy out there...tickin timebomb....tick tick tick....

Nice dolphin pic, that is frame worthy. Thanks for the report, I think I am gonna hit the PM shift Friday, anyone else?

The Pod of Rissos was one of the largest I have seen. I just paddled with them for about fifteen minutes. They are very cool.
Great day out there today, and many toad Calicos.

Ditto what everyone said. Beautiful day on the water, plenty of bait to be had at the cans, and clean, clear, warmer water. Everything you could want minus the right kind.
I went solo while Julie studied for her class. Looked like I launched first(?) at 4:30AM, and I finally landed at about 1:30PM. I wasn't going to give up easy with the best conditions I've seen in months.
Must've paddled 10-12 miles, with high expectations. Had some short biters on the spanish macks, which were probably barries or juvenile WSBs. Saw nothing that got my pulse racing until an hour before I quit. I drifted with the west wind towards the cans, still in deep water. I attached a trap hook to my weighted setup and bounced along the bottom. A short while later, I brought this rig up to check on its condition, and a 4-5 foot, about 50-60 lb. mako follows it all the way to my yak. And he wouldn't leave either, even after I poked his head a couple of times with my paddle. After the initial surprise, I thought what the hell and dropped the rig in front of him. He jumped on it, but I air-balled on the swing and he made off with the bait. I remembered I had a shark rig setup so I quickly put on the wire leader. Baited with a dead and live spanish, cutting them to leave a trail of blood. He never returned.
I threw the iron for awhile ending up with a rockfish, short barrie and some big greenies to show for it.
Just couldn't believe some quality fish didn't show up.

sounds like the baby mako's are all over.. my buddy and I landed 5 of em this evening off carlsbad in about 2 hours!! :shock: all 70-100#.. kept 1

Will be back at it 2moro.. taking a break from the yak for the week cuz my back hurts..I must be too old or something :roll: :lol:

I saw a shark in a few feet of water just at the launch. I couldn't get a good look at it because I was still making my way through the surf, but I thought that it was just a leopard, maybe four feet long. I didn't see any spots, and it seemed a little thick for a leopard, so maybe it was actually a mako... bet the tourists would love that.
