5/19 DP Halibuts

Did a super leisure launch on Friday AM with my wife after gorging on Denny's pancakes. Sunny and around 10kts all day. We baited up at the barge and fished the beach, no GWS seen. Lots of surfers did not seem to mind the recent sightings as well. Wanda got the first fish to the boat, questionably legal, so not a victim of the gaff. The fish spit the hook and was just floating there and Wanda swung the mauled bait in front of it. The halibut flared it's gills and sucked the whole dine in, so cool to see. This gave me some confidence that they were gonna be aggressive and they were. Wanda was the hot stick getting 2 keepers, 26 and 28 inchers. She was so stoked

We were both fishing 15# short 18" leaders Carolina rigged 3/4oz egg sinkers and #1 hooks nice perfect 6 inch sardines. We fished 10am-2pm and would have kept fishing except 2 was enough and wanted to get em on ice. Dumped 1/2 of our bait. Left em biting as we were both bit and spit winding in our last baits. Several shorts and a few heavier ones that popped off. Just as we were leaving a sea turtle popped up in front of us, never seen one in Dana before...good luck sign Tasty dinner Friday night, panko with a capers and lemon butter sauce and grilled halibut tacos tonight.

Congrats on the tasty catch, Andy. Sounds like your wife out fished you. Is that part of your strategy, to keeping her happy?

Very nice Andy. I was out there myself today (Sunday) afternoon, enjoying the live music from the Blues Festival. Lots of short strikes, landed only one short 18" Halibut on plastics... I'm too cheap to buy bait now. I got a nice 3' Leopard on my only Mac. I wish in I got some of that dinner you got there, but can't complain too much about a beautiful day on the water.

Congrats! I've not had much luck out there in DP but hope this is a good sign for things to come this summer.

Breaded halibut is one of my favorite ways to eat it. Nice outing with the wife!

What is that best way to nail one with gaff? Belly? Larger models are a handful when they go bananas . Just looking for a refresher corse. Congrats on take.

Gaff em in the belly and try to keep them down in the water while you slip your game clip on. Then bleed it before you haul it aboard. Easier said then done, and risky if there are dogs around.

It's really cool to see that you and the Mrs. can share quality time on he water. I picked up a second kayak at OEX Mission Bay with the hopes of getting my wife out there!

Nice report, thanks for that, Andy. Congrats to you and your wife on a nice haul. We need to go get us some, it's been awhile off of the water, and even longer away for those DP 'buts. Hungry now...
