In San Diego County, my kayak and somewhat expensive bicycles are always indoors under lock and key. Even that may not prevent theft, but it's better than leaving it outside.

My outback has a vin number on it, though it could be erased with a hot blade.

a friend, Donnie, Registered his kayak as a boat and stuck the numbers on the top of the inside so you would need to take a picture of it to see that their there, if its there.
