LJ-10/11 - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

We headed out before sunrise and I started to make bait while my buddy Randy started to make bonito! For about an hour, everytime we put something in the water a large bonito would take it. It was a blast until the dogs decided they wanted in on the action.

After the bite slowed a bit we headed further outside and Randy found this mako. What a tough little guy. He even tried chomping the kayaks. After a couple photos and before mom showed up, he was released.

Nice bite shot. That will be a different story once that fish gets a few seasons of growth on him.

Hmmmm....bonito everywhere, pup Makos, you weren't trying for calicos, sand bass, rock fish, sand dabs, sculpin, white fish, sheepshead, halibut, and still had that variety?

Seems the enviros, Iteam, and others against fishing just might be missing something, since they tend to think there are no fish left in LJ...

Nice shots...I didn't know there was a mako pup season. I've had mako before and it's pretty good....

Crazy. Did those guys behind you in the last pic launch that little boat form the shores? Thats just about as crazy as that shark.

I have no idea. I have seen boats like that launch at the shores in the past.

Yes, but landing a keeper on a kayak could tun bad in an instant. They bite hard and fast, and are contortionists.

He may even jump in your lap just to bite you, they bite at anything.

Awesome video, guess your technique worked although that looked like an angry little shark with some sharp teeth!

Great video! That is why I have the EXTRA Loooonng needle nose on board! Those little suckers will contort when you least expect it. It's all fun and games until someone loses a pinky

Why would launching a small boat from the beach be crazy? I've been beach launching small boats from the beach since 1971. Commercial lobster fisherman used to launch from the beach. A small boat is way more stable than a kayak.

Catching Bonito is always fun and a small Mako adds to the adventure.

If you have the right trailer its no big deal. I have a 12 ft gregor and can launch it by myself if the surf is small enough, which is 90 % of the time...

You can buy beach launch wheels or just get a few big boat fenders from west marine and use them to roll the boat in, or some people just detach and push the entire trailer in the water... I've seen it all, even a big boston whaler... just be safe in the surf and stay under 5mph in the reserve.

You got bigger stones than I do... I would've been in the market for a new rapala after I saw color on that thing.

Haha! That was a $20 lure. Im pretty cheap...so willing to loose a finger for a it.

If you can pin their head against the kayak with their mouth against the kayak, they can't really bite you. They're actually like alligators, they can bite down hard but they can't open up very easily at all. One hand could keep that mouth shut while the other holds the tail. Then your friend could pull out the hook.
