ketchup!

well...
it's time to "ketchup"...
have had more time for fishin' than postin' as of late...
feelin' like it was time to bring y'all up t' speed...

so on Wednesday 9/29, I'm minding my business whilst huckin' a plastic at whatever may bite, pickin' up a few sandies and calicos, and I got to fight my first leopard shark...
shile hooked up...my friend Mike calls and says, we have an emergency!...
we must go to Morrow Bay and whack some albies...
I'm laughin' my ass off 'cause I got this 4 foot shark pulling me into the surf...so I said "what time we leaving?"....hung up the phone and
got him to the boat twice, but couldn't get the hook out...he bolted and broke me off...no pics...bummer...
any hoo...had to high tail it back to shore to be at Mike's in thousand Oaks by 3....

Thursday 9/30/10 Avila Beach launch 5:00 am
whacked about 5 troll fish...(boring)...
got the fish to the boat once but no biters...
then it happened...
jig gets knocked down....my turn to reel in the troll fish...
Mike is brailing some bait...BOIL ON THE STERN!!!!
just as I get the lines clear...Mike is on a bait fish...
Rick is on a bait fish...the boils stop just as I gaf Mikes fish...I turn and look at the meter..."it's lit up, they're under the boat!"...I yell...
I grab my trusty Megabait...drop it in...it sinks for a bit... and then I watch the line coil up on the surface!!! Reeling like a madman...the rod finally loads up..."I'M ON!!!"
Mike and Rick's heads whip around in amazement...WTF!!!
laughing like a giggling idiot...I say drop something down there...
those boys were still fishing the flylined bait and not getting bit...
then they tried the megabaits and couldn't get bit...
my next fish was on the plastic...talk about whiplash when those two guys hear me yell FISH ON!!!! and the next on a megabait...again...disbelief on their faces!!! Priceless!!
I just love outfishng the bait boys with artificials!!!
Mike and Rick each got one fish on bait, while I got two megabait fish and one swimbait fish!!! I love it when a plan comes together...
we ended the day with 13 albies!!! smallest 22lbs largest 30lbs...
not a bad day at all!!!
I'm really glad I answered my phone....

Sunday 10/3 Corral Beach
Pierpont and I fished for about 5 hours...
got a slow pic of sandies and calicos...
a 2 lb calico was the JP fish for the day...
forgot the cammy....

Saturday 10/9 1.5 day Ocean Odyssey tuna offshore...
I got handed my first ever skunk on a sport boat!
22 anglers...1 tuna!
movin' on...

Tuesday 10/12-3 hour after work session somewhere in Malibu
sandbass were on the chew!...big sandbass!

couple calicos

woulda been a 15 lb stringer in a tourny!
total for three hours throwin a 5" christmas tree fish trap...
9 sandies 2 calicos 1 YBRF
biggest sand bass was 6 lbs even!!! oh my...
he took me in the rocks but I won!!!

love the sunsets on the water...just missed the money shot!

Thursday 9/14 Castaic Lake (Courtesy of Tattuna's last post)
Thanks Charles for getting me out there...
the morning started out painfully slow!!!
I couldn't buy a bite!
It was about 12 noon and not even a nibble...no boils...nothin'!!!
so I thought I'd try one last spot that usually will produce a LMB or two...
then I hear it! splash...slap...WTF?...couldn't see where it was...
THERE IT IS AGAIN!!!...AH HAH!!!I see it...all the way across this cove...
I haul ass...got there just as the sunk out...I threw on the bubbles wherer they just were boiling...my Zara Spook barely hit the water and just absolutley got crushed...a big ol splash WOOO HOOO!! FISH ON!!!
all by myself...no boats...no kayaks! just me laughin like a little kid...
five pounder slammed the thing...

after just about callin' it quits...I aint goin' nowhere...the meter is lit up...
there's a one here and there single fish boil...I know they're gonna blow up again...sure enough...300 feet away...zip over...huck on 'em...FISH ON!!!
4 lber...

and again...3 lber...

when the fish weren't boiling I could see big time marks below me...so I just hucked the lure willy nilly blindly hoping for a biter...what 'ya know...
it worked...

and then finally got a 2lb LMB on a swimbait! too cool!

thanks for lighting the freshwater fire under me, Charles!!!!

Today 10/15/10 Malibu...again!!...go figure...
4 hour session from 9:30 to 1:30...
halloween fish trap and red blam were the ticket today!!!
more big ass sandies...
first drop 4 lber!!!

and then there were more...

no nibbles here...we're talking inhalation!..

not again...bigger model this time! 6.5 lbs...God I love that chit!

this bad boy had an abnormally large head...22" lng he was...

only one calico today...

and alot of the sandies had this orange color on their underside...
anyone know what this is from? my guess would be eating cheetos!
seriously though...any thoughts?

total for today's 4 hour tour...
10 sandbass 1 calico
18 lb five fish limit!!! oh my!!! that'll never happen to me in a tournament!

all fish on all days were released...(except for the Albies!)

ok...
I gotta gotta go get some rest now...
me 'n' the wifey are headed to Playa Del Carmen in the morning...
I am going to flyfish Ascension Bay on Monday for bonefish, permit and or tarpon!
wish me luck!!!

Nice catch.

Question, is Castaic Lake the lake where it was reported that the Stripers had some high levels of Mercury? I was doing some late reading and can't remember exactly what lake.

AWESOME JOSH! I'm in baby land and new house lock down. I can't wait to get a little more grey in my beard like you. That means more fishing! Thanks for sharing, we all enjoy your posts. You always fish the way your supposed too...like a kid!

I have noticed a lot of variation in the colors of bass and also wonder. For spotties I know that a golden hue around the chin = spawning colors for females. High contrast black and white = male spawning colors.

For calicos and sandbass I am just not sure. I have caught them in the bays, in the kelp, and around reef type rocky structure. They also seem to look a little different depending on where they were caught.

Anyone know?

He's alive!

I love that chit, too. I'm more of a jumping minnow than Zara Spook kind of guy, though. I think La Jolla misses you, Josh. More fish than people these days .
