Pesky Calico bycatch

Hooked this guy while fishing for bass. Lucky for me, he forgot is was lobster season and missed a dozen pots he could have broken me off on.

What are we talking? 8-12 lb? I would really like to try and knock off the species this year. I am not on the board with the yellows, not yet. . What is with the pool noodle? Rod protector? Congrats on your by catch.
