Dana Point Red Tide ......Butt

Went fishing Dana Point today on the water 6:30 AM inside harbor I already notice red tide took over anyway got sardines then headed outside of harbor .
Only beach area was clear so I didn't wanna fish on red tide I fished shallow water
10am I had big bite I thought one of usual leopard sharks (actually act like that) but I saw big table coming out
Had some trouble to gaff but finally land 33 in halibut couldn't believe only 8 ft of water such big one there

Had a good day bring dinner is always make wife happy

Congrats! I've been fooled too many times by those damn leopard sharks too along that beach. I too have not landed my legal butt yet, came close but that day forgot gaff and net and lost them.

So where do we catch these pesky leopards? Right behind the breakers at doheny? What’s the preferred rig and bait?

Just normal dropped loop or Carolina rig with one once weight . Bait is live sardines. They biting bottom around 10-15ft of beach area and usually when bait is almost dead, sharks attack . I lost count but one day I hooked at least dozen of sharks 20-30lb If you wanna catch leopard sharks, it’s not hard at all

I fished in 10 foot of water last weekend and got kicked off by the coast guard. :/ was told I had to be 1000 foot from the beach.

No it was completely closed down not a single person on the beach except the coast guard. They may have opened it since Saturday.
