I BROKE THE CURSE!!! Fishing report 2/5/2011 - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

The day was beautiful and i was really pumped to catch a fish. We bought live bait from Mike at the landing and we were ready to roll. Everyone decided to work the sand all the way out, except for myself. I knew where i wanted to go and what time i needed to be there. I burned paddle all the way out. I was on a mission and I had a goal to catch a fish. I paddled so far that Mtnbykr and ericko didn't even see me anymore and the only means of communication we had was the radio. Someone made a joke that i had paddled to Hawaii. ( funny).

I made it to my location: yes, the very same place i got double hooked. Bait fish everywhere seals everywhere and some fishing boats working that same location. I worked that same location and BAM. I caught a sand bass (later when i paddle back to Ericko he told me it was a Calico Kelp Bass). Either way the curse was broken.

I worked the area and something snag my line and bit my bait in half. I then decided to work my way back to Ericko around 12ish and then we worked the beach, but i didn't catch anything after that.

On the way back the Sheriff stopped Ericko and I and asked us for our Fishing license and wanted to see if our fish were legal. So we showed the license and fish to the female officer and she left us alone.

I didn't want to kill the fish before my kids and wife got to see it, so i put it in my bait tank and drove all the way home. My daughter always ask me if i caught a fish and i would always bow my head and say no. When i got home the first thing my daughter asked was " did you catch a fish" and I said YES!!! do you want to see it. She was excited.

I then asked my wife to prepare the fish and she told me she was a city girl and didn't know how kill a live fish. So i grabbed a wooden plastic mallet ( the one used to install wooden floors and wakked the fish between the eyes.

(I see videos on you tube of people stoning their fish on their kayak) In the videos I always see the fish get knocked out, but no matter how hard i hit it kept wiggling. So I sharpened the knife and cut the mouth to bleed the fish and took out the guts, and that fish still wiggled a little after that. Then i gave it to my wife and said ok now its dead, I made sure it didn't move after that.

My wife asked me if I wanted to eat it or frame it (joke) And she also told me that i didn't think i could handle another day without catching any fish. (its been a harsh winter for myself)

The fish has been cut open head chopped off guts and gills are removed, cleaned and in the freezer. *since i read post to freeze the fish to kill any parasites*

Yes, i know its nothing exciting, but it is my first fish. Thanks for reading.

As many people may look and say "whatever, a small calico..." Just take a walk down memory lane boys and try to remember your first fish...

Too funny... Sounds like fish torture

This reminds me of the first time I took my old girlfriend Susan trout fishing.

She caught a nice 10" brown and a few minutes later I saw her swinging it like a club beating it's head against a rock, it was a bloody mess and still kicking. I said: How would you prefer to die, passing out in bed from slowly asphyxiating or having someone beat in your head in with a hammer?

After that she put her fish in the creel.

Congrats on breaking your curse. Back in the mid 90s I had a yellowtail curse where every yellow I hooked for about a year I lost to structure kelp or tangles. It took the most powerful force on the planet to break my Yellowtail curse. Thank God for El Nino~.

Keep fishing you got bigger and better things coming.

Oh and by the way did you catch any macks..I need some hoop bait.

If you mean mackerel, I didn't bother attaching the sibiki rig to catch other live bait, my bait bucket was filled with sardine. Some were still kicking way after 3 pm.

I know that feeling well, nice to break the curse. Eric never mentioned to me the kayak was cursed

My only advice is eat it fresh! If you are gonna freeze it ya might as well buy fish sticks!

congrats on the calico, nice feesh, I totally forgot about the curse yesterday, so that means yesterday was the first day of the rest of your fishing career, great job on the long paddle to get rid of the x factor monkey, thanks for a great day on the water, will definately do it again somewhere...

Nice first-fish dinner. But don't stop there: Bury the guts & carcass and convert them into perfect tomatoes! Works great (assuming you have a yard).
