YFT at 181 from Kayak

Jack from De-Fishing Soap invited me out on his boat to see
if we could hook up on some YFT. We headed out to the 181
and found a nice sized paddy along the way.

Hooked and landed my first YFT from the boat, then got on
the kayak as Jack hooked up. He handed me my rod so I
could fight the fish from the yak and I landed that (pics below).

I wasn't really satisfied, so I flylined a dine and paddled my kayak
around the paddy. I got hooked up and fought the fish for some
time. Many up and downs. Very cool.

I got the fish to color and just as I was going to gaff it, the line
broke. I made the mistake of using my LJ rig and had fluoro on
top of spectra, so there was no give. The drag was buttoned
way down to keep the fish at bay. Live and learn.

My first YFT and almost my first hooked and landed from the yak.

very cool Dave. That is what I am going after this weekend, not any kind of glory (not that glory is a bad thing......I tasted it once), just a unique and fun experience.

Yeah Dave!

Pretty cool watching them drain the spool so fast, completely different fight from a Yellowtail. What size flouro were you fishing, and was there abrasion on the line, or did the line just break? Also, how short of the 181 did you guys find the paddy?

Thanks guys. It definitely was a blast.

Josh: We were about 4-5 miles south of the 181, about 41 miles from shore.
As for the fluoro, I had 25lb fluoro leader on 65# spectra.
My drag was way tight when I got it to the yak. I guess
I should have loosened it up to let him have some running
room.
