How do i tie my top bouys on my hoop nets ??? - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

So im gona try hooping for the first time off my kayak, I need to know how you rig up your top bouys on the rope is there a certain way to do this?

The method Adam uses is a good one! You string the line through the buoy and attach some weight (5 oz?) to the end of that line so that it sinks back down and automatically controls the height of the line to keep the line vertical and the buoy right above the net without any line hanging around the surface.

Here's my method

Carabiner is zip tied to the bottom of the hoopnet and baitcage is clipped on to the carabiner

Hoopnet is shackled to the line/rope

Rope runs from the hoopnet to the shackle and through the buoy, light stick is placed in one of the three holes that I drilled out. I have three because I've used three different types of light sticks on these buoys over the last few years.

Two 3oz sinkers were inserted into the bottom of the buoy, this keeps the the light stick upright and out of the water while its in the water.

All line is wound up and kept bundled up using the Cable Cuffs. I used to keep the line on some homemade pvc frames but I don't hoopnet in more than 100' feet of water so these cuffs work for me.

Here's what it looks like as one

I went a little different route that works pretty good for me, and it allows for adding more rope as required.

My buoys have weights added as shown elsewhere, and allow for a light on top.

I made a leader for my buoy. The end of the leader must be large enough to allow for the buoy to go through it:

Now I'm feeding the leader through my main rope:

Feed the leader around the buoy, and you've got your connection:

IF you need to add more rope, you've got more rope with loops spliced in the end and ready to go.

Now I'm hoopin, and have too much slack. I wrap it around the buoy, going on both sides of the light. I add the cable cuff to the bottom of the buoy and catch the rope. The rope is so light that this does not affect the buyoancy of the buoy at all, and when I'm pulling the net up, the buoy and all that rope is in the yak, and now I pull straight up and have no extra rope or hardware in the way between me and the Lobster :

Here's the spliced/looped end connected to the net:
