Angry Pelican attack

Not sure did that happen to anyone or just me being stupid...

Anyway, few weeks ago i went to Cabrillo solo, as you know, there are hundreds of pelican hanging out at the bait barge all the time, so i just don't give a shit as usual, got to the bait barge, open my bait tank, and the guy was loading up for me while i was working on my FF, suddenly a boater yell at me "Look behind you", i looked back, there are at least 6-8 of them right next to the bait tank behind me, so i close the lip right away, but i know there was 1 sardine was drop out of the bait tank when the guy was loading the tank, and that sardine was stuck between the bait tank and my seat, when i was about to take out the sardine by my hand, the pelican started the attack, there were few of them attacking that 1 sardine at the same time, the sardine was stuck, so they were having hard time to get it out, and they do not give up, and not long after, the other pelican wanted to join, few of them jump on my kayak and 4-5 of them attacking behind me............i tried to scare them off with my paddle, but they don't give a shit at all....and it was too dangerous to use my hand when they were attacking.......at that moment, i gave up and felt kind of intense...but nothing i can do, just seat there and wait for them to finish...and i was surrounded by many pelicans.......after a while, they finally got the sardine out, and i paddled so hard to just get out of that area.

Second time..........
The following weekend, i went to NPH, got bait as usual, was trying to be careful by not letting the bait drop out, but of course, it happened again, so right away i was trying to flip the bait off to the water, and that one pelican was stand by next to me tried to attack the bait, and at the same time, my hand was there, and it almost got my hand......

Sorry for the long story, just want to share this and see you guys have similar problem when getting bait? and any ways to avoid this to happen again?

The pelis have been thick and dertermined this year in La Jolla. Some times there must over 50 hanging out in the back of the sports boats. Last time I was there I saw 2 pelis come over the rail at once. Don't take it personally. Mike

have a stick next time to try to flick the bait off your yak asap. that is the best idea i could think of. using a gaff doesnt sound safe, and those pelicans look like they snap pretty hard.

Actually pelicans don't have that much of a bite. Their beaks are just too big to get leverage. I'll take a pelican over a shear water any day.

You are missing the point!!!!!!!

If you feed a pelican enough, he will become your friend.......

A good friend that will guide you to your next YT boil!

Just ask my buddy Dave.

The Pelican Whisperer need only volunteer.

There is a mega Yak Fest Redux possible here. All we need is funding. The Great Pelican Escapade Video may be the way!

All we need is good video for submission to . . . http://afv.com/upload/ They swear we can win 10,000 to 100,000 buckos.

The Pelican Whisperer need only volunteer.

We can an easily put 3-4 boats around him. 'Maybe a GoPro on a gaff. And, we already know where to put the bait.

A few "dry" runs may be needed to hone the bit. I'd suggest we have some Sam Adams and shots on hand for the shoot crew during the trials. Maybe some Bactine too.

After checking with PETA, one safety diver will be required for the birds in case any of them fall in. The birds also require craft services and their own trailer. http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-i...al-actors.aspx

California Fish and Game suggests this be done outside any MLPA.

I can donate some good sound-alike Jaws theme music.

For creative muse, please study this old, but still shown title.

I'm sure we can best it with BWE talent! Heck, with the $ we win we can rent Birch Aquarium for the next Yakfest event.

Just ask my buddy Dave.

No YT that day, just a couple of Threshers later in the day.

The Pelis have been extremely agressive at DP these days, I have literally had to pull a couple of short WSB and barries out of their mouths while fishing the harbor. And they are coming onto the yaks, in force. I usually grab them by the beaks and shove them off. They're wimps when you get to know them better.

Ed, you a 100% dead on about shearwaters. I thought cormorants sucked until I had to handle a shearwater. Biting, pecking, flaping like crazy, making some sort of demonic noise, nasty way sharp little claws. Pelis are just big, ugly, and anoying. With our state's climate of over sensativity coupled with the publics complete ignorance of actual (not disney) animal behavior please be very careful that any pelican fend off looks like a gentle push and not a smack or shove. Just a precaution. Mike

They are annoying bait stealers and rig tanglers. I've left a couple of hooks in some at Dana and Newport Recently, but they don't learn. There is one down in Dana with about 3 lines hanging out of his mouth still trying to gulp down casted baits.
