Pretty sure it's a salema more than a grunt or chub, since it was in/near the kelp.
The one's I've seen diving/caught were more stripey than the mexfish pic stuck with pins, though. http://www.mexfish.com/fish/csalem/csalem.htm |

I guess that could be it too although I agree there were more stripes than in the one pictured.
