I have a revo and mounted rod holders similar to how you have mentioned. Everything you've mention should be fine however I definitely recommend the backing support. It will really add a lot of structual support. I bought an aluminum bar from Home Depot and cut it to size. The aluminum bar I used from HD is about 1/4" thick x 1/2" wide x 4ft. I cut it into approximate 3" lengths.
Make sure you use stainless steel screws and SS nylon lock washers. If you choose the right length screws, you shouldnt have a problem with rubbing up against the internal rigging.

#2 do nothing, if you grind on it the 1st time you get salt water on it the corrosion starts and it will never end..
