I'd err on the side of caution on that one. Looks like a wound with internal parasite that grew big. My opinion is that the meat is infected, small parasites you can't see are the ones that can ruin your GI tract.

Poor fishy.
Why take chances or gross yourself out? Give the poor guy a respectful send off to the afterlife, and catch another healthy fish for your dinner table. Just looking at the pictures kills my appetite. I think I'll make a margarita and give this thread a rest.

I appreciate the advice guys but this post was from last summer. Still don't know what it was. I did grill it and had no problems.

Pretty conclusively pyloric caecum, iow, a natural - edible even, if you didn't have to look at it - part of a fish, as reported above.

My yt wound
My guess is a cookie cutter shark bite, I banged out a nice YT last year and here it is with a fresher bite that hadnt healed yet. I am thinking the YT was under a patty relaxing as they do and was bit by one while in deep waters.

Landed a yellow roughly around the same time you caught this one. It also had a mark like that but not quite as bad. 2 experienced friends said it's a lamprey mark.

This thread keeps coming back from the dead.
When I caught this fish last year I was nervous from the wound pictured in the first post. When I cleaned it I was taking a very close look at everything that i usually just rip out and toss. I started to over analyze everything. The inside was completely normal. Yes that is the pyloric ceca, whatever the hell that is. Still not sure what the wound on the outside is from but the lamprey looks possible. I did end up eating the fish although not raw and didn't have any problem. |
