Newport Harbor is a great place to start. The waters are calm and the launch is easy from the life guard station. You can stay in the harbor all day and fish for bass and halibut or if you want to try open water the mouth of the harbor is not far from the launch.

If you leave the mouth of the harbor head left and you can fish the kelp line there. The water is still usually Pretty calm in that area. If the swells pick up and you don't feel comfortable you are still close to the mouth of the harbor and can head back in.

Plus there is a bait barge at the mouth of the harbor if you don't want to make bait.

If you want me to show you some spots in and around Newport Harbor PM me once you get set up and I can take you out and show you the launch point.
