Maiden Voyage and PB all in one
I picked up my new Hobie Outback on friday. Then had to work Saturday and finally got to get out today and fish. Hit up Dana point for the Low Tide. Long story short picked up this guy on a Sardine. Caught on a trap rig. This is the first fish I landed in the outback.
Question????? It was 41 inches with a girth of 28 inches at the thickest part, How much would it weight? I dont have a fish scale yet getting one tomorrow. |

im guessin' upper 30lb range but ive seen them measure 1lb per inch of length. I guess it depends on how 'flat' it actually is

The longer they are, the more they can vary in weight depending on their thickness. Usually it is most dependent on the thickness of the bottom filets. The link provided is for Pacific Halibut. If the fish was a true DFG 41" (measured with the mouth closed with the tape flat), you are probably looking at high 20s to maybe 30. With the tape wraped over the fish measuring to an open mouth you would probably be 4 -5 pounds less for that size fish.

Congrats on a very successful maiden voyage and a really nice pb flatty!
Greg's info is right on the money. Butts vary in thickness. I've seen some really thick ones and some thin ones so I can't see the length only being that accurate. I would guess yours to be between 25 and 30 pounds. Kinda hard to see how thick it was. Congrats again on a really nice fish. |

Sweet Hali. My guess would be 24.5 lbs. Nice way to break in the new ride.

I have two halibuts in that range under my belt...
the first was 40.5" and weighed 27.5 lbs... the next was 42.5" and weighed 30 lbs... So I'd say depending on how fat he was, a 41"er should be 28-30lbs... give er take...

Thanks. Everything that I had just bought was covered in blood or halibut slime by the time we got back to land. And the hali barely fit in the front hatch Forgot to mention we got checked by DFG just before we left as we were packing everything away.
