Poozed Out at the launch....Swell

Got up this 5:30 to check the cam, someone was getting ready to head out, so I figured the swell must be okay. Arrived at the shores around 7:30, to find a nice peak breaking in front of the launch. I decided to watch for breaks in the sets, but they were few and far between. People were surfing the peak in front of the launch with 4-5' sets. Figured I would watch the show for a bit and see if any other yakers showed up. Four people with sit in kayaks and no spray skirts showed up....that was a good watch, one made it out half full of water, one dumps in on the beach, the other two end up watching from shore.
Found a rather small Shakespeare gaff in the sand, if it is yours let me know and I'll get it back to you. The lifeguards ended up red flagging the launch due to small craft advisory and large swell. Maybe next weekend I'll get to peddle out it looked manageable to get out, but getting back in without getting worked......I'd put the odds at pretty slim. It looked like a lake out there besides the shore break.

Great idea not to launch.

The link below will help with your kayak planning.

You might have known that the buoy was reading
over 5 feet with mixed period, and head for a bay
or lake. Its the shorter period waves that really
affect the LJ launch beach.

The saying "know when to say when" hold true with surf launches too. Go home, chill and watch the show, or put all your gear away, except, paddle/peddles and PFD, batton down the hatches and go for it. Wiping out isn't the end of the world with nothing on the kayak to lose. You'll get to know what your yak will do in different conditions. Mike

If you drown, you can't fish any more.

I was contemplating that move, but the PA is pretty heavy to move around in the surf, if I had brought my wife's Revo I think it would have been manageable.

Good call. The PA is a game chager when it comes to just messing around in the surf. Mike
