Back from the East Cape

Just back late last night from our trip to Punta Colorada. Not the best fishing we have ever had down there. Not that there were no fish just not a lot of the real big ones we like to get. We caught a good number of Dorado and Roosterfish but again mostly smaller units. One of the guys, Jay, got a real good Tuna that weighed 60 pounds, the photos of this fish do it no justice, the girth of this fish was amazing which of course does not show in a photo.
The highlight was getting another guy into our Billfish club. Craig Miller from Denver caught his first kayak billfish, he earned it as this was his fifth trip down south with us. It was a real nice sail we estimated at 110 lbs.
Video to come but here is my favorite still shot.

question

do you paddle out from shore or do they take you to an area with some bill fish on a boat then hook the sails?

This fish was hooked maybe a mile from the beach, certainly in paddling range. With that said we always have a support boat with us on our trips to Baja. It gives our clients more fishing time and less time spent paddling to a location. Not only that there is a very real danger when catching bill fish and the boat is there as a safety measure. We have had fights on bills as long as five and a half hours that covered 15 miles so the boat comes in real handy for the run back. The fish are hooked fought and landed from the kayak.
Like I said though these fish can be caught easily within paddling distance from shore.

Look again, only the same color this was on the Trident 13 you were on the P13. So the only consistant here is me and Alonso.
I just watched the video of the catch, it was pretty good with some great footage of the fish under the kayak. This fish barely jumped so not much good footage of that.

Damn, Jim, are you wearing a bib or a PFD in the Moyer photo? Sounds like a good trip. I gotta get back down there.
