Newport Sunday 6/23

Not an epic day, but a fun day non the less. Launched at "M" street at 7:00 am. I was expecting to paddle a mile straight out from the jetty but the wind was howling and with my limited experience I thought it to be unsafe. So I just stayed inside and worked all the nooks and crannies.
The first hour or so was dead, then it just came alive. I found a small stretch that produced a fish every few minutes. Nothing huge but lots of bass. mostly spottie's and a couple calico's. 3 legal, but I did not keep them, I am gonna wait till they grow up.
About the time I needed to leave I hooked up with something big. It took a short run then just anchored it's self and I could not gain anything. Every inch I took, it would just take right back and a few more. I have caught several bat rays in there but this felt different. The rays seem to run further. But I guess I will never know, she broke me off. I had a 10lb flouro leaderand I guess I pulled 11lbs on it.
A good way to start the morning!
After that I was pleased to have my wife and another couple join me for a paddle around Balboa and a nice lunch on one of the beaches. I love my Yak!....Oh ya, and I love my wife too.
So in ending I would like to impart this bit of knowledge. For all you married guys, GET YOUR WIFE A KAYAK! Then spend some time paddling with her. It will be fun, family oriented, healthy, and she will let you go fishing more!

One last thing. I spoke with a couple of the local residents. They are starting to organize a petition to ban kayak launching form that site. This is because some people are launching at 4:00 am and are making alot of noise in the process. Please try to be considerate when launching early in any neighborhood. It it vital that we all represent our sport in a good way and be courteous to these folks that spend a buttload of money to live on the water.

Yeah I have seen other kayakers making a lot of noise being very inconsiderate. I try to keep it down anytime before 8am. fficeffice" />>>

Sounds like a great day to me. I've taken my wife out paddling. May have to try that.

Many 5am launches for me. Definitely need to watch the noise. I miss the days when you could in the HP/USCG parking lot at any time. They didn't care back then, now they seem to have gotten a little snotty. Maybe the noise issue? You can still park on the street and launch though.

Thanks for the report bro.
We launched on the same day, only that I launched at Kids Beach. What kayak were you on. I might have spotted you on the water if you were around the bait barge area .
