Well you have your fish finder screen and then you have the transducer which is what shoots and receives the signal into the water. The transducer can shoot different frequencies and different frequencies are better for different depths. There's a few good explanations on here if you use the search function on the different transducers.

That's a pretty solid budget. Just have to decide whether you want a 5" or 7" screen.

I think all units 5" and up have the split screen capability. I highly recommend getting the unit with GPS. Great for marking your spots and navigating in the fog.
