Hobie Alter and Phil Edwards were major influences to those of us growing up in North County in the seventies. We surfed Hobie longboards and learned how to sail with Hobie cats. When we broke parts surfing the boats at Tamarack, we were always able to get a "bro deal" on replacements either at Hobie Dana Point or Hobie Oceanside.
I still paddle a Hobie Quest, one of their first kayaks, so since about 1971, I've had a Hobie on the side of the house, in the garage or in the back yard.
Hobie Alter was a true visionary of the ocean lifestyle we all wanted to live. He was a good man as well.
History has turned a page today.
