The person interviewed for this story said that the large number of stingray injuries was not "unprecedented". Maybe so but in the four years that I was a lifeguard at the Shores and Blacks, the most stings we ever had to deal with in a single day about five, and that was unusual. More than 35 were reported yesterday. That is a big number.

For those worried about stepping on a stingray, the best thing you can do is shuffle your feet while walking in shallow water. The injuries occur when you step on one of these rays. If you bump into them, they will quickly swim away.

I dove La Jolla last Saturday and saw a ton of stingrays outside the surfline. Shuffling through the surf and looking into the water from above I saw a few but was blown away by the number of shovelnose that were swimming around. Large and small. They were everywhere.
