Big Bear Lake

I'm taking my nephews kayak fishing up there tomorrow. Has anyone been recently or have any suggestions? I did read Paul L's excellent report. http://www.kayakfishingzone.com/dest...s/bigbear.html

We were in Big Bear last summer camping for a few days. We rented a pontoon boat for a 1/2 day and crushed the trout. Night crawlers and light weight a few cranks off the bottom.

Make sure you cut the worms in half, or the trout will short bite them and you won't hook anything.

The kids loved being able to catch fish consistently. We put them on the grill for lunch and dinner.

It was a lot of fun. We didn't see any yaks in the water.

I will be up there next week but do not plan to bring my kayak. Why, you may ask? Because the water district that runs the lake wants $25 a day to put a boat, (includes kayaks and float tubes), in the water.

The economy in Big Bear is in the tank and the biggest summer draw is the lake. Why would the locals put up with this kind of crap. One would think that the community would be doing everything possible to get tourists to visit. If I had not already booked my vacation, I would be going to a more kayak-friendly place.

I fished from my yak up there last summer. Paddled all the way from the Village area to the dam. The wind picked up so bad on the way back it looked like the ocean with white caps. First time I thought I was gonna take a swim. Fishing was ok though. I will be back up the with my yak the end of Aug. And yes, it's $25.00 to put your yak in the water.
