Sailing a Hobie

I spent a week at Catalina and finally got around to using my sailing rig on my Outback. What a blast, it sails pretty well. If you have a Hobie try the sail rig, a lot faster than pedaling or paddleing.

That is Hobie's 3rd. propulsion system, the wind.

Peddles
Paddle
Sail,

.........and soon to come the electric motor that mounts in the drive well.

Do you suppose the electric motor will have reverse?

I would imagine it will have a reverse.
-Talk has been it will run on those small, sealed 12 volt batteries.

It was an expensive option.
---------------------------------

If you want a motor go with the milk crate with 2"x6" motor mount, ratcheting tie down strap, dry cell Optima battery from Costco, and $100 trolling motor.

A down and dirty set up that really works.

If you install an electric motor do you need to register the kayak?

Iceman 06-24-2009 03:25 PM

yes you need to acquire a CF number from the DMV if you use any motor.

I am surprised more Hobie dudes don't use the sail, it is pretty cool.

I borrowed a sail for my Revo once. It was a lot of fun and made it easy to cover long distances. The only issue I have is where do you put the sail while fishing?

A really cool thing happens when you peddle with the sail deployed. As you are propelled through the water by foot, you create, "apparent wind" which, as it blows over the sail, creates horizontal "lift" which, in turn provides additional thrust.

I know it sounds weird but this really works.

Its a bit of a pain, but I tightly roll up my sail and put it under the paddle bungee on the side of my Revolution. If you do that you just have to remember to rinse off your sail well when you are done with it.
