Lost Rod at LJ Shores 7/1
 

Hi everyone -
I just lost a rod this morning at LJ shores when I got DUMPED by those waves - 4 to 6 feet and coming fast. As new to this whole sport, I obviously don't have the entrance/exits mastered yet - and I thought it was easy. . . ouch. I lost it in about 4 to 5 feet of water somewhere just left of center of the launch. It's a 7 ft. Diawa rod with a Penn 320GT2 reel and red Spectra line - and it's brand new, not even a fish scale on it yet. Any help or suggestions in how I could find it would be greatly appreciated. Hey Dan... I think you were the one I talked to this morning after you got tossed. It was definitely BRUTAL out there today. Very dangerous! BRUTAL! From the water, we could hear the lifegards make announcements of the rip currents too. On my return, another yakker and I decided the waves were too dangerous to ride in and so we held the back of our yaks to ride in the water. A huge wave snapped it from my hand and my yak was literally airborne and did a cartwheel, crashed down and the next wave sent it into a second airborne cartwheel. I was tossed around behind it watching it between waves crashing around me. There were no break between sets! There were a couple of guys on the beach running into the water and pulling people and yaks out and one grabbed my yak while the other found my paddle. I thought the launch was crazy enough! I found a lot of stuff washed up on the beach from the non-stop people crashing. I didn't see your rod but hopefully like I told you, to post here and someone would let you know if they found it.

Even while we were out on the water, way out there, we had huge rolling waves the entire time. It was crazy! Took me most of the day to get rid of the sea legs feeling.

Hope you find your rod and continue to keep trying with the yak. You were getting clobbered by those waves today and even some of the experienced yakkers I talked to out there turned around and left without launching. I'm surprised my yak is not a pile of splinters right now! Way to go Malibu X-factor!!!

sure didnt look as brutal as it was when I was unloading this morning, But it did eat me up on my first launch attempt.:mad: The wave were not huge, but they where coming in quick, and close together. If it makes you feel better, I snapped a Seeker rod in 2 first thing in the morning. Teaches me not to stash my rods when launching in surk like that. I packed everything underneath for the trip in, and landed with barley a drop on me. So it goes.

:egg: Sorry to hear about the loss, what a drag. I went out Saturday and the yak was swamped to the rails on the lanch. I had to pause to look in disbelief and think if my scuppers were plugged or what. My dry bag was floated out - fortunately I had it on a leash, like everything else my yak. Made bait, and that was it, besides feeling a little:puke: motion sick from the large swells I somehow managed a dry landing.

Hey FishinDan,

Went out at lunch today with some snokeling gear in hopes of finding my gear, your gear or some gear belonging to others that have found themselves on the underside of the water these past couple of days and came up empty. Sorry.

I spent about 30 minutes swimming around out there trying to avoid being hit by all the rental kayaks out there. I checked both before and after the breaking water with no luck. I am going to try again later this week. I will post anything I find.

Thanks for looking. I went snorkeling out there Monday morning just after low tide to see if I could find anything too and no luck. All I saw were a bunch of nasty looking rays and a good size fish that seemed to look at me and laugh. . . .

I wonder if there's anyway of checking with any of the divers that go out there regularly to see if they've found anything? I saw on one of the other posts on this site that the OEX divers found some boat fins for another guy. Is there another forum we could be posting or looking at? Anyone have ideas?

If not, I guess I'll chalk this one up to the "learning experience". I'm not going to let this happen to me again. . .leashes everywhere. And so sad that I'm the one in the far background of the photo with the guy who caught the big WSB on Sunday - staring at the water looking for my gear. boohoo. I hope my next post on this forum will be a photo of me with a fish.

I've been watching daily and haven't seen any fishing gear though. I could of missed something though. Good Luck.
