Vail Lake 4/19

After reading a few reports about kayak fishing Vail Lake, I had to try it out for myself. Let's just say if you have never fished Vail Lake I would recommend giving it a shot. Started the day drop shotting worms and throwing jerkbaits for a few fish here and there. Then once the wind picked up I started slow trolling zoom flukes in about 8' of water and started really catching them. Ended the day with 30+ fish, a few monster crappie and the rest largemouth bass. Here are some pics from the day:

Thank you! I was lucky to catch a few really nice bass. I love fishing out of my PA, its a fishing machine.

Vail

Anyone going to Vail this weekend? I have never fished it (haven't fished largemouth bass in more than 10 years!). I would love to give it a try. Sunday anyone? Vail is in Riverside right?

That place has the biggest Crappie I've ever seen!

Just out of curiosity, with the seats in your PAs being so high does that make the Kayak top heavy at all? Seems like it wouldn't be as stable as a regular sit on top Kayak.

Way to go Kurt!!!!! Looks like you had a blast.... Dude let's try and hook up this week....

Janine:
I might be fishing Vail again Saturday if I can make it back up there. The lake is located off the 79, just before you get to Temecula.

CK:
The pictures really don't do those crappie justice. They are the biggest ones I have ever seen! As for the seat in the PA, you can either have it in the high position like in the last picture or you can lower it so it sits much lower. Even in the high position I never feel like I am going to tip over, especially since the PA is 3' wide.

Ok. I was thinking either Vail or Sutherland. Any thoughts on Sutherland?

I think they are having a mud run this weekend. you can call the office to find out. get there extra early if it is going on. the place gets packed when they have events.

fisher_4_life 04-22-2013 02:58 PM

I have actually never fished Sutherland so I am not sure. Thanks for the heads up about the event! It looks like they are having a mud run on Saturday 4/27, so if I go that day it will be really early.

I thought it was a private lake? How much does it cost to get in?

finyak 04-22-2013 06:48 PM

Glad to see you had a good day, those look like some quality fish.

fisher_4_life 04-23-2013 09:52 AM

Thanks everyone for the replies! It is a private lake but they allow kayaks to launch for $25.

Do you need any kind of membership to launch the kayaks? And do you just show up at the gate and they will let you in with the kayak?

fisher_4_life 04-23-2013 12:12 PM

There is no membership needed to launch your kayak, just the $25 fee. Basically you just show up to the gate and go into the house looking building just to the right and pay the person inside. They will then give you your pass and you can go in the gate from there.
