Best fishfinder for fishing la jolla

So my elite 4 chirp took a shit, and its now time for a new one. West marine will be crediting me my full amount. I was hoping to get some feed back from the pro's. I have a pro angler 14 2016, not to sound snobby but money will not be an issue so please im open to all suggestions. I was not to happy with the unit anyways, thing would only work half the time. Thanks in advane. :sifone:

Have a 7ti with total scan and the berley pro mount could not be happier with it.

7"

7" Lowrance Touch Screen and you'll be a very happy guy with a big split screen.
50 to 200 hz transducer.
and a Ram Mount.

Lowrance 7 TI. Touch screen, chirp, downscan or totalscan depending on which transducer option you pick. $100 more for the Total scan option. I you din't choose the Total scan transducer and later decide to get it it will cost you an additional $300.

If you don't mind me asking, what mount did you use for your elite ti?
Still debating 5 or 7. Most likely 5 because outback is smaller than the PA but depending on how much I can afford. I got some basspro gift card saved up so we will see.
Thanks!

My Lowrance 5ti touchscreen give me mucho problems.
Water drops or wet finger cause the screen to act up a lot.
1. No response, freeze up.
2. Wrong selection.
3. Cursor jump around.

Gotta use screen lock + dry towel a lot, or you will be frustrated....
When it works, it is great.

100 dollar rebate on the elites right now until July 4.

Da22y,

Do you have your transducer in the hull or in the water? Transducer completes the ground for the touchscreen, so if your transducer is inside the hull insulated w goop, you have no ground and the touch screen will malfunction. I have 7ti and my touch screen works with water blood and mackerel slime all over the screen.

chris138 04-12-2017 03:27 PM

another consideration...

The elite 4 unit is so solid, I'm surprised you say it died. If i were you, I would be sure to completely rewire your power-supply before you install a new unit. That especially includes the battery box if you use one. The majority of issues are caused by faulty PS, or a bad pin on your lowrance PS cable. You'll get a new "red plug" with your new device, but be sure to test your batteries and wiring. I rewire yak and replace SLA batteries every season. Also keep in mind you will be tripling your amps pretty much. Need at least 12v 12ah for a 7ti to work all day.

A lot of times westmarine will just replace shit, when actually the product being replaced was not the issue to begin with. Customer service is so good, maybe too good haha.

IMO the 7ti is tooo heavy for the 1" RAM ball. I tried it, and its all floppy and wants to sag frequently. Highly recommend using 1.5" RAM ball and double ended socket.

Chris 138,

My transducer is inside the hull with goop indeed.
I will make it direct contact to water and see. You have a point !
I hope it is the "ground" issue.

Thank you !

Guaranteed that's your problem. Now you gotta get that crap off the face of your skimmer and clean it as well as you can. DON'T use sandpaper on the business end of the skimmer. Ideally you want your transducer in the water, a couple inches or more below the surface. Im guessing you don't have a scupper w a transducer mount...

Grounding issues aside.... boom arms for the 'ducer are unwieldy, but produce unparalleled resolution. I know everyone will say "if you install it correctly w goop it works fine". Sure it produces an image that "looks" right when you dial in the colorline. But how much of your signal strength is reflected or lost in the first 10mm of ping (ie your goop and hull)? 20%? 50%?

With a proper boom arm that has the 'ducer 5 inches below the surface, the elite 4x can easily track the bottom in 1000' of water at 83kHz. But shooting though the hull, your gain is maxed out just trying to find bait in 200', and you'll never see the yt on the bottom.

I would love to see some images from the Total Scan transducer if someone would like to post up!:cheers1:
