What rod??

Hello BWE,
So I have recently acquired an accurate boss xtreme DPX2 50 reel and am not sure what rod to pair with it? Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks in advance,

Derek

That is not exactly a kayak fisherman's reel, so you may want to ask your question on another board. But, that reel would go nicely on an unlimited rod, 60-130... Considering the reel, it would go nicely on a Phenix Black Diamond; Seeker 2x4...

You have a whole lot of reel there, made for long range trips, fishing for things like Cow and Super Cow tuna, have fun with it!

You said a 50 sized reel, but I assume you meant a 500 sized reel. The 2-speed 500 is not exactly a kayak reel, but is more of a tuna reel. I have many Accurate reels and love them for tuna, but never take them on my kayak in part because they are high maintenance reels. For that reason I have learned to service my own reels and saved mucho bucks thereby.

With that said, I think of the 500 as a 50# reel and would pair it with a 50# rod like the Calstar 700H. It would be an excellent combination to fish for those 40-100# bluefin that just now starting to show up in the 1.5 day range.

Thank you for the responses!

It is the DPx2-50 gawp pound.. I have my share of kayak reels I just received this as a gift for those long range that I intend on getting out on this summer. Thank you both for your suggestions!!

Hmm...have to admit I'm confused. I just checked the Accurate website and they don't even list a size 50 DPX2 reel. Did you get it used, and maybe it's a BX2-50 reel? In any event, a 50 sized reel is more of a cow reel for Clarion and the Hurricane Bank, which is a winter/spring trip of 12-15 days. If you are planning to use it this summer on say a 7-day trip it would be more of a trolling reel or maybe a kite reel. For either of those applications, I would suggest a short stout rod like the Calstar 760H, or maybe a rail rod like the 770XXH. Both are basically 100# rods, although they will fish up to 130#. Hope this helps.

Well the photo sure says it's a DPX2-50. Here is what the Accurate website says:

"The Dawg Pound Extreme reels are offered in all sizes starting in a DPX2-400N to a DPX2-30. These reels have three synced dogs for instant stopping power and offer Accurate Patented TwinDrag® system for a smoother, even drag for those hard fighting pelagic gamefish. These reels are perfect for schoolie tuna, Kingfish, Sailfish, Stripe Bass, Stripe Marlin and whatever other local gamefish you are targeting."

So maybe they recently started making them and the website hasn't caught up. Either way, trolling rig or kite rig is still my recommendation. Hope you slay some big ones with it.
