aggressive shark and bonitas

After making bait at the pier, went to the outside buoy,
one mac up and one down. Fly line goes off rounding the
buoy. Then the line goes slack and the weighted rig goes
off then goes slack. I reel in both. Fly line mac didnt look
touched. Weighted mac crushed head. Rebaited and fly
line goes off resulting in a good size bonita. As I'm taking
it off the other line goes off and another bonita. Finely
made it to the outside corner for a few more smaller
bonitas. From the canyon to the point the water dropped
a couple of degrees. Decided to try a megga bait tipped
with cut mac. Pulled up some rock fish and this guy.

Can someone tell me what this is?
At this point its getting to be late afternoon. The wind picked
up at 4:30 after being clam most of the day. The fly line
goes off then slack. I reel in and no bait. This happened 2
more times in a row , so on the 4th time, I set the hook with
a with a good yank. I can feel its got size. Just then the fish
starts a run right at me. I reel as fast as I can barly able to
keep up. It gets below me and I can see its a 4 or 5 foot shark.
Didnt make out what kind it was. It went right through my 25 lb.
leader. Hook #1 gone. Then my weighted rig goes off. Fish on.
Again I can feel the size, Then the line goes slack. Hook #2 gone.
I rebait with my last live mac. As soon as the mac touched
the water, instant bendo. Hook #3 gone. I could see it and it
looked like the same shark. I peddled in a little and told Josh I
was being followed by a shark. Put another mac down and
instant bendo again. Shark on. Hook #4 gone. This is getting
frustraiting. I just bought that 5 pack of ringed owner hooks.
I decide to call it a day and head north at a good pace. I get out
north of the point and tie up using a old hook. I fly line a dead
mac, and as I'm letting line out, it gets hit. Hook #5 gone. I
cant beleive this thing is following me. I put all my gear away
and headed in. Do sharks really do this, or is this just a strange
fish? I was wishing I had a steel leader.
Watch your toes out there.

Whitefish

I thought it was a whitefish, but my book has
a more torpical colored fish. I can see the blue
now. The book says they are fine food.
Thanks

I know

That's a whitefish, and one of the better eating fish IMO. Watchout for his gills, they can be razor sharp. Nice catch.

Whitefish are excellent eating...once you get one there are usually others schooling around so if you're looking for table fare, re-bait and try again. As for the shark, I've have them do this before and it's a bit unnerving...they seem to follow a potential food source...you'll often see them hanging around boats off shore waiting for the chance to snag fish as they are reeled in. Being this close to the water, however, it gets a little dicey...don't want one in the lap!

Shark

That's why you should always carry your steel braided leaders for that special occasion.
