First day out on my new Yak

I picked up a Malibu Stealth 12 from OEX Mission Bay just in time for my birthday. I unfortunately did not get a chance to get it wet while I was down in San Diego so I had to wait until I got it home (Rancho Cucamonga). Lucky for me, Silverwood Lake is only a quick 20 minute drive.

Got out of court early today and headed up to Silverwood. I was not planning on doing any fishing but rather, I decided to familiarize myself with the new yak and get a feel for it's stability.

The wind wasnt blowing in Rancho and the weather report showed 5-10mph gusts at the lake so I figured it would be a nice easy paddle. When I got up to the lake..... The wind was blowing. Not really bad but just on the verge of some whitecaps in the main lake. I launched anyway and paddled out.

I had a big grin on my face the whole time. The yak is surprisingly stable and quick. I wanted to try standing and was able to hop up on my feet and "walked" back and forth on it with NO PROBLEM. (Im sure most of you can do this on your yak too but dont rain on my parade okay?)

Next was the flip it over and self rescue practice.... No problems here either. Very easy to flip over (get it back right side up) and hop right back on.

Today was great. I was only out on the water for a little over an hour but I feel my little "training session" will pay off big time when I take it to the BIG POND :kayak-surfer:

Nice job on the wet rescue training, its a great skill to practice and if you ever do take a swim in open water its comforting to know getting back on top isn't an issue.

i'm from rancho.. that is not a 20 min drive! :D.. well maybe it is...

try pudding stone. its just down the street too. lots of bass, sunfish and catfish. also you can take it to prado, beat the shore crowd and catch some dinner.

Dude we need to hook up. Bring your yak up to rancho and we'll go try to nail some stripers up at silverwood. Then I'll come down to pendleton and you can school me on that fishery down there :reeling:

There are three of us that live in Corona. We're all noobs to kayak fishing and two of us are new to salt. We should plan an outing.

Outstanding! congrats on a beautiful yak! Great going on the self rescue! that is a very important thing to practice and know!

Tight Lines!

I'm in riverside, when the water heats up let's all hit Silverwood. And welcome, the wind always blows there so be careful!

blitzburgh 04-10-2012 07:55 AM

Good job on the first paddle!

Stinkymatt, Guppy, Enceladus, Mr. Adventure, Blitzburgh....

It seems we're all in the same area. Im down to paddle and fish anytime during the week (Im off work on almost every Mon - Thurs). If one of you wants to hook up and do something local (i.e. Silverwood) or head down to LJ or NP or Malibu when things get going PM me. I got a Nissan Frontier with my yak and rods on the roof. Bed is open (but its the short bed type). Let me know!

Thinking about doing something this THURSDAY 4-11-12, just not sure yet.

Rancho here as well. I prefer Pudding Stone over Silverwood since I dont know squat about Stripers.
