:paddleersmilie:Four miles offshore, in deep water...sheet! It'll be the best FAD (Fish Attracting Device) around. Put that thing together and give me the co-ordinates, let's go.

When I reach the area, I'll be a little tired and thirsty. I'm going to get on my radio and ask Adi to swing over and give me a cold beer and a donut!!!

Hubbs has been trying to pull this off for at least 15 years. Maybe with a hedge fund behind them they can make it work.
The whole argument of feeding the masses is a complete fallacy. Many farmed fish are a premium product and quite expensive. Too pricey to feed the poor. The other draw back to farms like this is the food for the fish is usually made from wild caught fish. 10lbs of sardines to make 1 lb of salmon is value added but a losing plan for feeding people. Not to mention the concentrated excrement (N) around farms.
I cant imagine what all those concentrated pelagic bluefin penned up along Baja are doing to the Nitrogen content of the coastal water.

Four Fish

Get the book..."Four Fish" by Paul Greenburg.
It's a great book that talks about Salmon, Bass, Tuna, and Cod.
The author talks about fish farming in detail with both the pros and cons.
It's a great read.

The linked story isn't so great. It omits a few important questions. A few years ago when I had the chance to visit Hubbs for a story, they were planning on using agriculturally derived fish food - plant based. I wonder if this is still the case.

Pollution dispersion is one reason for locating this farm 4 miles offshore. The solution to pollution is dilution - we've all heard that. I'm no scientist - I don't know whether it is defensible. Sounds plausible to me.
