Cabrillo 6-12-20

On the water about 6:30.

FF wouldn't turn on so no temp or depth info.

Water was dirty as the low tide was going out. Lots of bait right off the beach jumping here and there but no biters.

Moved out deeper and caught a few small guys. Weird day. Lots of different species and the fish were spread out. Usually if I find the pattern that is working and I can usually repeat for a few more before it stops working. Not today. Every fish was different except that they were all on the shallower side.

The last fish of the day was the biggest and was probably in 15-20 foot of water in the kelp that was closest to the beach.

Overall a nice day on the water except for the FF problems.

Oh ya total yard sale coming back in. Luckily didn't lose anything

Final count:

10 Calico
2 Barracuda
1 Copper Rockfish
1 Greedy Opal Eye (Best fight of the day!)
1 Tiny Red Sculpin (Can't believe this little guy bit this lure)

All fish released and caught on Big Hammer perch grubs or Tube baits

Question...Is there a good launch area at Cabrillo, I am interested in trying some new grounds. Thanks in advance.

Let me know if you ever want to meet up there. I would be happy to show you around.

There is map that I made near the bottom of this discussion of the beach launches:

Enjoyed your report. Seeing that Opaleye reminds me of fishing off the rocks just Nth of there. I once took a five-pound Calico in 3ft of water while fishing for Opaleye with muscle. The fish in the oxygenated surf are more colorful, like trout from a river. Sometimes better fishing is found in shallow.

Thanks for the offer on meeting up, and the map.

It looks like you didn’t have too bad of a day👍🏼
I wouldn’t mind heading out that way sometime, hopefully when the water warms up a bit.

The bite was off as well at Dana Pt. but we scratched out a few.
