6'6" rod too short?

I really like my Daiwa VIP 270 for a 20# rod, and I might want to try the 865H as a 40# yoyo/dropper loop rod. I want a little more backbone than an 870, and I think the 865 would be perfect.

The length gives me pause. I don't know if I am going to miss that extra six inches when I have to swing the rod out over the bow of the 15' Prowler if a fish runs under the boat. On the other hand, it's not a huge difference in length.

Anybody have success or failure stories with a 6'6" rod ?

I have to rods that are 6' 6" and one that is 6'. The only problem is reaching far enough in front of the bow when the fish is working around the yak. The 6'6" is no problem it is just long enough but the 6'r I need to lean forward a bit to get it over the nose and the handles on the front to clear. Otherwise casting irons or just working the rod I think works well.

I went with the shorter rods so it makes it easier to land the fish working it closer to the side when you are getting ready to gaff. Also trolling the bait allows the point of the rod to be lower/closer to the water level.

Just my experience and preference.

I've used 6-6 rods on a prowler 15 with out any problems going around the bow. Ive also used a 5-6 kencor baja baby boomer rod. Great leverage and lift but not so good around the bow.

Just the thing for when you need to pull up the bottom of the ocean !
