Dana point 05/26
 

Took a trip up to Dana Point to fish somewhere new launched out of the bay there got bait and went around the corner north. Trolled sardines in 100’ up to about level with salt creek. Then trolled right out side the kelp down to the point. Turned around and went up the beach right outside the surf. Caught to very small White Sea bass. Then trolled south until be blown off by 12mph wind. Used a Carolina rig with 3oz with about three feet of 60lb liter. You’ve been getting after it lately. Caught n released probably 5 leopard sharks in SD bay, military side shelter island area of the bay in 10-20’ water after dark. That was Sunday night.

Couple questions for you. Do you think chum sickles would work? And we’re you using live or dead bait? Last one ha were you drifting or anchored.

I was anchored, I don’t think chum would hurt? I was using live bait and I was anchored. But I think drifting and dead bait would also work lol. They ar win shallow and we’re on sand near eel grass. Good luck

Keep searching and you should be able to find one of those leopards. Drop some squid down to bottom. What exactly do you intend to do with it? Fun to pull on, any shark for that matter. Soupfin will provide far more action though. Hooked one at LJ on similar rig as yours mid column. Better yet would be finding the mother of that seabass. :D

I would like to eat one leopard but primary looking for something to rip some drag.

Leopard near the surfline line at doheney, just outside south of the harbor. Nice area to fish where you were.

those pictures make me think corvina, I'm glad you knew what it was because I would have been confused

Matthew fishing deep off Saltcreek and the headlands came be though at times. It more about finding some structure, rock piles and reefs in that area.

There’s plenty of sheepshead that will hit shrimp and lots of bass too that will eat squid. If you want plenty of Leopards you just need to drift along Doheny beach with some finbait just outside the surf break.

There's lot of small WSB near beach area

Usually.


I've caught white seabass without them and with canines.



I've caught corvina without canines, and with other WSB type indicators (can't recall at the moment if I've seen them with bars yet).


Either way, there's a lot of variation between them and they can be easily confused.




The sure way to tell them apart is the zipper on the belly. WSB have them every time, and Shortfin never have them.

Wsb canines? Was the fish under ten pounds?
