land 'n' sea 'n' yak

Been too busy to make a report, so here's the latest three trips in one report to bring y'all up to date:
Trip #1
Easter weekend camping at Casitas Lake...
shoreline fishing only...
no boats, no yaks, just feet on dirt....
huckin a 6" Senko on a custom 8' Gloomis rod with a
Calutta 200 GT spooled with 10 lb...
early morning and late evening were the best times to fish...
early morning mist....

best two fish....3.5 lbs
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t...9/P4040443.jpg
and a 4.5 lber...

Trip #2
finally finished getting ready for the next big job...
Pierpont and I signed up for a 3 day stand up trip on the Islander to San Martin, but some people cancelled and the trip did not go....heartbreak...
no way we're not fishing so off to San Diego we went...our plan was to do two back to back overnighters, but when we got there we found out the Pac Queen had a 1.5 day...
ended up on a 1.5 day trip on the Pacific Queen...way better than 2 overnighters...got hooked up 11 times...
lost two to the dogs, and one to the knucklehead next to me...oh well...still landed 8 nice YT in 15-18lb range...
the highlight of the trip for me is this...
I just got a brand new Calstar 100j wrapped, and picked it up on Tuesday...
most of the fish were being caught on yoyo iron but there were some puddlers and breezers...so my plan was, after boating my first yoyo fish, the yoyo rod went in the rack!
and I was determined to get my first surface iron YT!!!
mission accomplished...not only did I get my first surface iron YT...
I got #'s 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 all on the surface iron!!! and the two I lost to the dogs were surface iron fish also...
what a blast!!!! standing on the bow with iron in hand...
eyes constantly scanning the surrounding waters for signs of life...seeing the puddles or wakes...huckin' on the boils...
seeing the "V" from the charging fish chasing your presentation...
the eyes suddenly focus in on the beast inches
beihind the iron in hot pursuit...
getting ready to crush the iron...witnessing the the burst of speed as he engulfs the iron...the rod loading up....the weight of the fish...
the head shakes...the adrenaline...what a rush!!! nothing like it!!!
here's my first ever YT on the surface iron...

Trip #3
Pierpont and I headed to Castaic...
wanted to fish LMB but ended up chasing stripers...
The south wind came up early and we were on the north side of the lake fishing for LMB and not having much luck do to the wind...
so wedecided to head over to the south side to find some protection from the wind end stumbled upon a massive school of stripers...
well...what right minded angler could pass that up...
we had no bait and the dang stripers did not want any artificials...
so I panhandled some sardines frome two guys in skiff and we were set...we picked off several stripers in the 1-3 lb range...the biggest being 3.5 lbs on the boga...

there you have it...
the last week's fishing adventures of Pierpont and Rider!
stay tuned for the next exciting adventure...
it will be this coming Saturday, the 17th...
it is a private charter on the Mirage...
taco time!

nice mix! good work on those yellows!!

THE DARKHORSE 04-12-2010 09:36 AM

That's sick, Josh!

I love that you took the time to get a photo of your first surface-iron Yellowtail. You looked stoked! And I bet you could feel those fish for days after...the good kind of pain! Next time, get some bendo shots that show the whole rod.

Your custom wrapped matching quiver is pretty well filled out these days. Now you have two ridiculous jig-sticks? Was that sick 6490 you got wrapped not enough? Yes, this is the pot calling the kettle black :sifone:.

GHOSTHUNTR 04-12-2010 02:58 PM

There is nothing better in fishing than catching surface-iron yellows, in my opinion. Congrats, I know these will be the first of many.

I had the camera in my pocket...
I had confidence he would come...
actually, this was the second one as the actual first one was
lunch for a big ol' knot head....rat bastard...
and yes...the quiver is coming together very nicely...
I may need just one more long rod though...
they are just too cool...
now...if I could just tho it like you do!
compared to the average bear...I do alright...
but stand next to a deck hand or YOU...
and I am...how you say...distance challanged....
practice practice practice...
