5/17 Brown Camo

Nice flat calm conditions today - I hooked a few barries on the iron
after loading the tank with greenies at the south bull kelp.

Caught this halibut under a ball of bait about 85' deep on a mackerel, near
the outer kelp line. Used a three-way swivel, 3 oz torpedo weight, 40#
fluoro leader, circle hook.

Solid battle, and praying for a halibut (not shark) all the way up ... :)

Incredible! I could feel the power of that halibut all the way in HB--thought it was an earthquake!

How do you keep a halibut like that from going crazy in your lap?

Great catch.

Holy Mackerel 05-17-2009 08:55 PM

Nice job Larry! Time to eat! :eating:

Congratulations!
What a great looking pic. Your clothes, your kayak, your custom rods, and the fish all have coordinating colors. Was meant to be. Weight?

Curious. Whats the blue boat bumper all about?

roosta 05-17-2009 09:57 PM

Nice one Larry!
Sorry for not calling you back.
I'm heading out tomorrow... I am in some serious need of luck!
Thanks for the post, maybe I'll sink one to the bottom...
How much did that beauty weigh?

THE DARKHORSE 05-17-2009 10:42 PM

The other white meat...

That's a pretty sick photo, Larry. I'm always impressed by well cooridinated color combinations. The matching set of rods with earth toned foul weather gear and that beautiful fish to match. I'm even more impressed by guys who don't use a game-clip on big Halibut :D. Did she freak out with the face gaff and Boga grip approach?

AWESOME!!! simply AWESOME !!! way to go .....:cool:H

:luxhello:.. Damn Larry. When I spoke to you last night I wasn't expecting her to be that big!

1Flatfish 05-18-2009 06:33 AM

Wow!

I can see by the marks on your boat that it's barely legal. Looks like you had to stretch it out a bit! Very impressive.

blackcloud9 05-18-2009 06:55 AM

Seeing her come to color was a heart-stopper  for sure. But since
panicking ;) is not allowed on my boat, I gaffed her on the first swing,
and she sat there looking up at me going, "now what?"

I got lucky that she didn't go super crazy, she was kinda "chill'n"
actually to start with.

Since I didn't have my big fish bat with me, I gingerly pedaled over to the
closest PB who helped out with "calming her down" in exchange for a
picture of his little boy with the halibut. :p Thanks Jack.

The bright orange "stream machine" is for kayak water fights and/or
washing the deck down on the water before the blood and slime dries ...

After wrestling with this big slimy thing for pictures, I looked like I'd been
barfed on by an ALIEN - from head to toe. Well worth it!

The blue boat bumper was orpaned in the middle of the kelp. (?) I went to
check it out, no ropes on it so I consdered it litter and kept it for the kids.

She only weighed 21 pounds, 43 inches, I'll have to get that scale checked!
.
.[Edit] OK, seemed a lot heavier, she was over thirty pounds, dang scale!

Here's how you pedal in ----
(Who needs a game clip when you got a trout stringer?!)

Beautiful fish! Definitely get that scale checked. Congrats!!

grey zone 05-18-2009 07:32 AM

The halibut length / weight chart says a 43" halibut should weigh around 37 lbs. Throw that scale out. Nice fish!

blackcloud9 05-18-2009 07:54 AM

Thanks Grey that makes me feel better. I tried to check my digital scale
at home and it wouldn't register weight anymore. Opened up the battery
area and it was all corroded.

:shot: Duh.

I thought it was strange that I got like 25+ lbs of fillets off a 20 lb fish,
that's fillet magic!

I'll call it "30-something".

ratdog 05-18-2009 08:02 AM

Definitely a beauty. What a thrill that must have been.

Podaker 05-18-2009 09:15 AM

The Pastel colored irons are the real finishing touch.
-One must have a hint of color you know-;)

Nice fish Larry.

LocoKayako 05-18-2009 10:44 AM

Very nice fish Larry.
Hell yeah, that fish is more than 21 LBS.
Congrats on a beaut of a fish.

"nice fish! I also like the link to your fishing photo's"

:) The Santee Lakes bluegill population got a respite from the weekly prodding and poking of my little girls' fingers!
