Solo on SD Bay

So I thought it was going to be a tough morning. Parents get old and call about things that are urgent to them but really can wait. 3:17 is an early wake up call. Freaking chirping smoke detector. Stopped at Mom and dad’s on the way to Shelter Island. Checked the smoke detectors. Took one with me as I was certain I would need to replace it to reduce the early morning wake up calls. Fishinmike was working so went solo.
Launched from Kellogg at 0600. Marine layer and a few Yakers testing their luck. Air temp was comfortable water was almost warm. Tide was going out and there was a light breeze. Trolled my croc on the way out. No bites. Lots of bait fish jumping. Lots. First fish hit hard and put up a good fight. 14 inch Sandie. Second fish was just as good. 18 inch Hali. Was nice to catch, land, and release. The bait fish jumped all over for the two and a half hours I was out there. At one point I cast my motor oil green perch grub into a ball of bait and was immediately hit. Landed another 14 inch Sandie. Did it a second time and my line ripped off my real. Set the hook and started the fight then my line snapped as if cut. Well the guilt sank in. I caught 8 Sandies and a Hali. Time to get off the water and take care of the old folks. It was a good morning on the water. Think the universe rewarded me for stopping at my parents on the way out. I was good with my morning of catch and release. All my bites were on green plastics. Hope it helps if you go out. Good luck fishing family. |

Scoot you are 100% correct. I must have gotten in a hurry to get my post out that I did not pay attention. Thanks for the correction as my mistake makes me seem like an amateur. Of course that maybe true and I am just really lucky.

Those are nice looking spotties. What class of line were you fishing? They would be a total hoot on light gear, but I don't really know anybody who fishes less than 20# tackle in the bay, including myself lol.

FullFlavorPike I use 4lb on a spin reel when I use my perch grub and it is a blast when a keeper hits and runs. Got to set your drag right the and work the fish.
