Dont keep your reel in gear...

Unless your drag is light, or you like to go for a swim. Went out today for the second day in a row. Weather was a little more bumpy than Tuesday but when the fish are biting, you gotta do it. It was the usual parking lot but i managed to find a little opening and started the wait. It was getting close to having to go in for work when my boat started to lean and i couldnt figure out why. Next thing i know, i'm in the water and my boat is flipping over towards me. Well, i've been around the water long enough to not freak out just because i ended up in there instead of staying in my boat, so i flipped it back over real quick and my brain started thinking. Crap, i've probably just lost all my rods, my buddy's gaff, etc. As the boat comes back over all my rods are still there! YESSS! The camera/phone box is floating near by so i grab that (thank goodness for pelican boxes) and situate myself back in the boat. The whole reason i ended up flipping was still stuck in the rod holder, so i grab that puppy and i'm FISH ON! I didnt have a ton of boats around so i lucked out, not getting pulled all over creation. Taped out at 41", i dont have a scale so not sure how much it weighed. Thanks to the guys who came over to see if i needed any help!

Casey

what did the monstser take in flipinn u over!

driftwood 02-25-2009 07:35 PM

I do believe this makes your 3rd yellow. I saw Josh unravel that tangeled knot mess and save your fish on tuesday. Josh, that was nice quick work!

TXyakker 02-25-2009 07:44 PM

take some

Luckily, all i had to donate to Posiedon was my tackle box and the scotty rod holder i didnt have in the bracket. I'll take losing a couple bucks worth of tackle over hundreds in rods and reels.

That does in fact make my 3rd, and i'm loving it. I did get some major help with the fish yesterday, from one heck of a fishing guide. Though, he could work on his "arrival time" some times. Must be that 8 hours of sleep he requires as a fishing guide :)
In all seriousness though, for you newer guys looking to learn, he definitely knows whats up and is more than willing to learn you a thing or 2 when you tag along with him. :notworthy:

Nice work Casey - three tails since Sunday is a pretty impressive BENDER!!! Sending me those pictures on Monday must have got the fish gods on your side, even though it sounds like they had a little fun at your expense. Thanks again for the pictures and the great story.

Sure you are ready to head back to Texas?

P.S. - I finally sent you an e-mail today and my post is coming soon

Congratulations I am glad you ended up besting the beast. I was sitting next to you heard the clicker start singing and out of the courner of my eye saw the bottom of your yak rolling up. Great you still had all your rods and could tell it was hard rolling your yak with the yellow still pulling hard. Glad it all worked out...........:reel:

Congrats, what a story. Glad all ended well.

Who's the guy behind you?

And that guy on the pretty big boat behind you, he looks familiar... :D

Congrats to all that scored. And for all that didn't - we rocked, I think we outnumbered these guys that did hook up at least 10 to 1. :D

Good Lord. It was worth the beauty!

I should buy a lottery ticket...

One of my reels broke yesterday while out there. Thankfully not the one i was using for squid, but still a bummer. I couldnt bring myself to go out there again with only one reel, so i went and got one of these

A shiny new Diawa saltist 40! Went out again this morning to see if the fish were still biting and to see if i could break in the new reel. Got some squid, paddled out to a nice open spot (a whole lot LESS boats out there this morning), and started the wait. My rod holder was in FRONT of me this time, so i could see it when it starts to bend. Had my drag set a little looser too :D. I pulled out the sandwich to see if that trick still works, and as i'm opening the box to get it out my rod starts to go! No way, the sandwich trick still works!! I grab it out of the rod holder and go for a little ride. Thankfully with less boats, i had nothing to worry about in the direction i was being towed. Since i had 2 fish at home and i'm moving out of state in a month, i already decided this was going to be a C&R day. I got the fishy up to the boat and pulled her in by the mouth.

Snapped a quick picture, took out the hook, and sent her back over the side. The new reel worked awesome! Now that i had my fish, i was good for the morning so i paddled around and watched some others hang a few yellows. Headed in early to get to work on time again!

Way to go out there AGAIN Casey! They say everything is bigger in TX but I think they might be wrong about the fish you are catching!

Pescavore1 02-26-2009 04:35 PM

Big kudos to you, Casey, for the release :luxhello: Well done on the recovery, too.

I know what you mean by the sandwich trick. My fish in January was a sandwich trick and my fish a week ago was a drink trick. I think it has to do with reverse psychology or something...make the fish think you are distracted.

Before this trip on tuesday Casey was almost convinced he had some kind of Yellowtail curse. I hope catching three Yellowtail over thirty pounds on three consecutive trips helped make up for lost opportunities.

I couldn't be more proud of you for releasing that trophy to fight another day, more people should give that feeling a try. I love the calm look in that Yellowtail's face, I think she knew you had good intentions. It doesn't get much better than watching a trophy fish swim off, that was caught on a new reel's maiden voyage, and still making it to work on time.
