Amazing trip to Louisiana for BIG fish

Here are a few shots from my trip to Louisiana this past week.
We had a great time fishing with Jeff from Mustad hooks and Kevin and Jordan from Mexican Gulf Fishing Company.
You had to have a boat to get to these fishing grounds but once on location either behind the shrimp boats or near the oil rigs it was all kayak fishing.
This is one of the sharkiest places I have ever been but well worth it for the big fish.
We had a 140 plus YFT get sliced like butter by a big shark and also landed a shark that had to have been over 300 pounds. We had three tuna over 120 and several big dorado, Amber jack, bonita and black fin tuna out by the oil rigs and shrimp boats. My biggest tuna was tail hooked which made for one hell of a fight. We hooked several more big fish but either go sharked or simply broke off.
Fishing behind the shrimp boats was very sketchy because there were so many sharks, and they were all worked up. Look up a video of a feeding frenzy and that is what was going on right next to your kayak. I had several slam right into the side of my kayak.
When the wind blew we stayed inshore for amazing action on trout and bull redfish.

Nice tunas!

Awesome Jim.
Two photos really stand out...the tuna head one for sure, and with all the shark action you described...the one with you dangling your toes in the water.
Thanks for sharing dude!

Very, very cool with great photos. I'll hope to get down there some day.

If you want to fish with some incredible guys that will get you on fish, visit Kevin Beach and Jordan Ellis at Mexican Gulf Fishing Company in Venice Louisiana. You will not be disappointed. Your arms will ache from pulling on fish and your sides will ache from laughing.

Looks like you had some great weather out there! How far offshore were the oil rigs?

Jim Sammons LJKF 11-07-2012 08:08 AM

The rigs were from 13 to 25 miles out.
When I said there were some big sharks down there I was not kidding. This photo does no justice to just how big this shark was.

Awesome!!!

Jim Sammons LJKF 11-07-2012 12:34 PM

So with some research it seems that shark is a Dusky.

raffman55 11-07-2012 01:46 PM

Looks like a great time, and a lingering pucker factor with the sharks...wowzers!

Tman 11-07-2012 06:26 PM

Great pics looked like it was a blast...

steveooo 11-07-2012 07:46 PM

I'd say either a Dusky or Bronze Whaler. If you have a pic with the tip of the tail, that would help. If it is a Dusky it's a big one and probably almost as old as you are.

Great trip Jim just amazing!
